Although we are traditionally more of a tea-loving nation, in recent years the number of coffee enthusiasts in our country has grown significantly. Colorful cafés all around the city are filled with people ordering different types of coffee. With this in mind, we’d like to share with you the preparation methods of some popular coffees that you can easily make at home. Of course, the taste of coffee made with professional machines is quite different, but even with the methods we mention, you’ll definitely enjoy the flavor of your homemade coffee.
Almost all popular coffee types are based on espresso. By adding water or milk to it, you can prepare other well-known varieties. While making espresso without a coffee machine is difficult, it’s not impossible. The best way to make espresso at home is by using a moka pot. Here’s the step-by-step process:
Commonly known as “Latte,” in Italian it’s called “Café Latte” or “Café Latte Macchiato.” This coffee is usually served in tall, slender glasses and can be topped with cream upon request. Making it at home is simple. You’ll need coffee, milk, and a mixer. Prepare 8 grams of coffee in a moka pot as explained in the espresso section. Heat the milk and froth it with a mixer. Then gently pour it over the coffee. Your delicious latte is ready!
Another Italian classic, cappuccino, is sometimes confused with latte. The main difference is in the milk ratio. Compared to cappuccino, latte contains more milk and less foam. Apart from that, the preparation process is very similar.
Mocha is essentially a chocolate-flavored version of latte. Add 24 grams of cocoa powder to your freshly brewed espresso and stir until dissolved. Then add 30 ml of frothed, heated milk. For presentation, you can sprinkle chocolate or cinnamon powder on top and even add cream. Note that for milk-based coffees, regular cow’s milk from supermarkets is perfectly fine. Currently, until February 16, 2022, there’s a “Dairy Products Festival” at Araz Supermarkets with discounts on milk products — a great chance to stock up for your coffee moments.
Turkish coffee, which we also enjoy, is a staple at many gatherings. But how did it earn its name? After coffee was first discovered in the Arabian Peninsula, the Turks introduced a completely new brewing method, giving birth to what we now know as Turkish coffee. While today it can be made in electric cezve pots or machines, many still prefer the traditional method.
To prepare it at home, simply add coffee, sugar (optional), and water to a cezve. For one cup, two teaspoons of coffee and one cup of cold water are enough. Stir well so it dissolves, then cook on low heat without stirring further. Before it boils, when the foam rises, scoop some foam into the cup. Continue brewing and then slowly pour the coffee into the cup.
Coffee is a passion — once you fall in love with its taste, it’s hard to let go. Still, just like with many foods, moderation is key. Remember, health always comes first!
